NFC Ratings: Kellen Moore, Cowboys, Rams, Allen Robinson

Cowboys

Cowboys owner jerry jones said the most surprising aspect of the Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers was their “inability to support games.”

“I think our inability to sustain the plays that you need in any successful practice or certainly a successful play, you have to have a number of plays over 10 or 15 yards. These are additional to support readers. We haven’t received any of that. I think we had one in their 10 or 11 there, the first two or three quarters. We’re reviewing the whole game at 10 a.m. this morning with our staff, and we’re really going to do it. We spent most of yesterday on quarterback issues. In the end, we couldn’t really sustain an attacking effort. said Jones, via the Dallas Morning News.

Jones added that their defense was “up to the task” despite Tampa Bay’s success in the run, but reiterated that their offense was unable to start.

“I thought our defense gave them a normal offensive output or a more balanced offensive output. I thought our defense was up to snuff. Although you look at the stats, they ran us pretty well, especially when they saw what they could do on the outside. In general, I think the story of the game was our inability to launch an attack. I thought we handled the ball reasonably well and early, but what I thought we got wrong was that we couldn’t get third downs. This happened with penalties. It happened by just not playing the game. And, so, you say, ‘Well, can you fix that?’ We better fix it or you can’t compete in the NFL. We can compete.

Jones thinks first round OT Tyler Smith filled in the left tackle well for Tyron Smith.

“The one I’m really proud of is Tyler Smith. I think by definition you have to give him his due to come out there and have his first game in the NFL and start at left tackle. We know what prospect he’s got. is, but we think he held his place there very well. I think our center played very well. We can win a lot of games with him having that kind of play in the center. So there are certain things to look at, but not much to smile about because of how we didn’t complete the task at all. And that needs to be fixed.”

Kellen Moore

Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy plans to monitor OC Kellen MooreThe Week 2 game plan as QB Cooper Rush takes over for injured QB Dak Prescott.

“My job is to make sure the three coordinators are equipped to succeed,” McCarthy said during his press conference. “I make sure Kellen knows I’m there; we’re going to take a look at the muster list today – maybe a little longer than usual.

“It’s part of growing as a playcaller,” McCarthy added. “Let’s be honest, in Kellen’s time as a coordinator, he was able to play very, very aggressively. But we are currently in a phase where we have to be a little smarter in certain situations.

“We did a bit of extra work yesterday on the third down,” McCarthy continued. “The Mojo Moment was all third tries. I really liked that, because our competitive periods – and we do more of that than I did, I know, in my years in the North – I think that not only helps our football team, but it really helps our young guys, too. Kellen and the offensive staff have been working on this since April, longer than April. We just have to trust what we have built on our menu. You have to adjust when you have changes in the composition. The most important thing is not to overreact. I just want [Moore] feel that from me. I have to do a better job; we all need to do a better job.

Rams

The Rams’ biggest off-season addition was WR Allen Robinson, but he was nearly invisible in the season-opening loss to the Bills. He was only targeted twice and finished with a take. However, Robinson is taking matters into his own hands and doesn’t expect too many games like this.

“Everyone wants to have opportunities” Robinson said via Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times. “In some games, that’s how it happens sometimes. So… go back to the drawing board and try to figure out how we can improve.
