Use of Bioavtur shows Indonesia’s commitment to reducing emissions from air transport

Indonesia’s national energy policy is to switch from fossil fuels to new renewable energies.

“One of the strategies for accelerating the use of new and renewable energies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is to replace primary and final energy with existing technologies. significantly to the achievement of the objective of new renewable energies and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions ”, declared the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Arifin Tasrif, during an event entitled ‘Ceremony to mark the successful flight tests of the use of Bioavtur J2.4 Jet Fuel’ on Wednesday (6/10).

According to Arifin, the Ministry of EMR published ministerial regulation number 12 of 2015 which requires the blending of biofuel with jet fuel avtur by 3% in 2020 and 5% by 2025.

The air transport sector contributes 2% of global CO2 emissions, and this level is estimated to increase in the future. In other words, air transport has a significant impact on global warming and climate change. For this reason, it has become a shared responsibility to prevent or slow down the negative impacts of greenhouse gas emissions produced by air transport.

The synergy between the Ministry of EMR and the Ministry of Transport to reduce emissions in air transport was created with the signing of a joint protocol on December 27, 2013.

“The protocol aims to foster cooperation in efforts to use aviation biofuel and renewable energies in a sustainable manner between the Directorate General of Air Transport of the Ministry of Transport and the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energies and Conservation of energy from the Ministry of EMR ”, said the Director General of Air Transport, Novie Rianto, during the reading of the speech of the Minister of Transport.

In addition, the decisions of the Minister of Transport in 2013 on the national action plan on greenhouse gases and of the Minister of EMR in 2015 on the supply, use and trade of biofuels impose a plan of use of the bioavtur mixture in the air transport sector, by 2% in 2016, 3% in 2020 and 5% from 2025.

“The development of bioavtur is a strategic issue not only at the national level but also at the global level. Therefore, long technical processes and continuous coordination are needed to assure stakeholders, as this is a breakthrough for the aviation industry in Indonesia, ”explained Novie.

He went on to say that Indonesia has expressed its commitment to make the necessary efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce emissions in many national and international forums. In fact, in July 2021, Indonesia set a more ambitious target in updating the NDC and the Long-Term Strategy for Reducing Carbon Emissions and Climate Resilience 2050.

“Special for the air transport sector, the Ministry of Transport is committed to efforts to reduce emissions at the national and international levels, by issuing accompanying regulations, by participating directly in the strategic discussions of the working groups of the ‘International Civil Aviation Organization or ICAO, and actively participating in the implementation of ICAO policies to reduce carbon emissions from aviation activities,’ Novie concluded.

For the record, Indonesia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement is expressed in a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2030. Indonesia’s NDC says the country will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one. status quo condition (BAU) of 29% on its own and 41% with international support. The energy sector is expected to reduce its emissions from 314 to 446 million tonnes of CO2e. One mitigation action that plays the most important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector is the development of renewable energies.(IY)
